OTTAWA, Feb 6, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Former Liberal Member of Parliament David Iftody, 44, died suddenly Monday of an apparent stroke. Iftody was a strong pro-lifer and represented the Manitoba riding of Provencher until he was defeated in the last federal election.

Karen Murawsky, director of public affairs at the National Affairs office of Campaign Life Coalition told LifeSite that Mr. Iftody was very open about his pro-life stand. In 1993 during his election campaign he said, “As a lifelong Catholic I am pro-life and oppose abortion.” In 1998 he explained to a pro-life group in Manitoba that he was grateful to pro-lifers for his own birth since his mother was single at the time of his conception. He often presented pro-life petitions in the House of Commons on behalf of his constituents.

Prime Minister Chretien issued a statement today noting that Iftody “was a fine parliamentarian and a dedicated and creative Member of Parliament.”
