OTTAWA, June 6 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pro-life forces were pleasantly surprised today with the Senate report released by the subcommittee to Update “Of Life and Death.” The subcommittee was set up to review the recommendations made five years ago by the Senate regarding the care for the elderly in its “Of Life and Death” report. Due to ongoing pressure to legalize euthanasia in this country as well as advances being made by the death agenda in many other countries including Britain and a few American states, many Canadians were concerned that today’s report might push us in that direction as well.

On the contrary, even on the issue of establishing a separate offense in the Criminal Code for “compassionate homicide” or “mercy killing”, an offense carrying with it a lighter sentence than for murder or manslaughter, the Senate refused to comment, observing that “the Minister of Justice, when requested to appear, noted that the Latimer case is before the Supreme Court of Canada and comment on the issue by a political body is therefore inappropriate.” (The court is scheduled to begin dealing with the case of Robert Latimer next Wednesday, June 14. Latimer killed his teenage handicapped daughter seven years ago in what he classifies as a mercy killing.)
