OTTAWA, May 16 (LifeSiteNews.com) – On Thursday, in the Senate, Senator Noel Kinsella urged the Ontario government to alter its stance with regard to Catholic school funding in the province. Kinsella referred to the recent condemnation of Ontario by the United Nations Human Rights Committee for funding only Catholic denominational schools. Ontario refused to alter its funding system explaining that the funding was constitutionally guaranteed.
Kinsella urged a revision of the Ontario position. “Have there been consultations between the Government of Canada, which represents us internationally, and the Government of Ontario, which does not seem to be taking this condemnation of a human rights violation by Canada at the level of seriousness necessary to overcome the issue, as all would desire?,” he asked.
Activists on both sides of the issue are encouraging action. Religious groups including the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops support the opening of funding arrangements to include other faith denominations beyond the Catholic Church. However, there is also a move to forbid all funding of religiously based education.
Senator Kinsella, was largely responsible for the Senate’s approval of “sexual orientation” being added to the Canadian Human Rights Act.
