TORONTO, Jan 28 (LSN)—The Globe and Mail reported today that the Canadian Abortion Rights Action League (CARAL) is claiming that Canadians have reached a “consensus” in favour of abortion. The pro-abortion group commissioned an Environics poll which says it has found that four out of five Canadians believe that abortion is a private matter between a woman and her physician. Of course, believing that abortion should be a private matter does not necessarily mean an endorsement of it. However, according to the Toronto Sun, in the most recent Gallup study on the topic, done in 1995, 35 per cent of respondents said abortion should be legal under any circumstances, 49 per cent said it should be legal only under certain circumstances, and 13 per cent said it should be illegal under any circumstances. In addition, it is worth noting that a November 1995 Environics poll commissioned by Campaign Life Coalition indicated that a clear majority of Ontario citizens opposed abortion funding. This result was consistent for almost all categories, men and women, union and non-union members and even NDP party supporters. Similar results have been obtained by polls in other provinces.
