Mahony of Los Angeles urged Catholics to take time to reflect “upon our own lives and circumstances to see what evils can be eliminated during this Lent.” Among the “areas that might need our attention,” he cited “passivity toward attacks against the value of human life, such as abortion, the tossing away of newborn babies into dumpsters, and the neglect of the elderly.”
