The Catholic Group for Health, Justice and Life, representing the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Catholic Women’s League of Canada, the Catholic Health Association of Canada, and the Canadian Association of the Knights of Columbus filed its written arguments (factum) with the Supreme Court of Canada in the Robert Latimer Appeal. The case is being heard June 14. Pro-life forces want Mr. Latimer’s appeal dismissed by the court. The CGH argued that parents should not have the right to decide whether or not to kill their children as Mr. Latimer did with his disabled daughter, Tracy. The minimum sentencing provisions for murder cannot be cruel and unusual punishment, even in cases of so-called “mercy killing”, in light of the transcendent nature of the right to life and security of the person they protect.
