ROCHESTER, Minnesota (LifeSiteNews) – Students at a Minnesota Catholic high school are upset that they and their peers cannot bring a homosexual partner as a date to prom.

Lourdes High School in Rochester issued a policy for its prom on May 14 that forbids students from bringing guests from other high schools unless their date is of the opposite sex.

“All student guest’s [sic] MUST be the opposite gender/sex of the Lourdes Student accompanying them,” a permission form states, according to a copy obtained by KTTC. This has caused trouble for some homosexual students and others who wanted to bring a same-sex friend from another school, according to the outlet.

One senior called the new policy “hurtful” while another student called it “homophobic.” It’s not clear from the KTTC article if either of the students quoted have same-sex attractions or if any students at the school have partners of the same-sex.

The high school defended its policy to uphold Catholic Church teaching on homosexual inclinations.

“The Lourdes High School Prom Guest Permission Form has consistently been required for students wishing to invite guests who do not attend Lourdes as our ability to accommodate all those wishing to attend is limited,” Lourdes stated. “The expectation of opposite gender guest invitations has been in place at Lourdes for years and reflects the Catholic values upheld by Rochester Catholic Schools. It was included on the form this year to avoid confusion and be upfront with students before submitting a form.”

“If Lourdes students and parents would like more information, they are encouraged to reach out to school administration,” the statement read.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are “intrinsically disordered” and “acts of grave depravity” and that the homosexual inclination is “objectively disordered.”
