(LifeSiteNews) — Self-described “Catholic” U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced on social media over the weekend that she is freezing her eggs ahead of the 2028 presidential election campaign.
The leftist “Squad” member who serves as the de facto leader of New York City’s Democratic Socialists of America described her decision that conflicts with the teaching of the Catholic Church as “Badass” and that it made her “feel more in control of (her) life.”
“Usually, I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs, and I want to share that with anyone who is — and I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and I think that, you know, I was saving for it for a very long time, and there just isn’t a ton out there, I feel, and sometimes it can feel very daunting,” the New York Democrat said on Instagram.
“And as women in general, we are not taught about our bodies, we are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause, whether … whether you want to plan to have a family, whether you don’t plan to have children biologically,” the Marxist-leaning politician added.
“In this political environment where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy,” she said, “I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations and share these processes, especially for working women across the country and normalize them.”

“She’ll turn 37 in a couple months,” Matt Walsh noted in a viral X post responding to AOC’s announcement. “If she got pregnant now, it would technically be a geriatric pregnancy. Instead, she’s freezing her eggs. This desire to start having children late in life is completely baffling to me. I’ll have kids in their 20s by the time I turn 50. AOC apparently wants to have a toddler at that age. Totally backwards and ridiculous.”
Harvesting and freezing eggs for possible future in vitro fertilization (IVF) is reprehensible according to the Catholic Church.
Catholic teaching recognizes the abortive nature of IVF and the associated practice of cryogenic preservation of embryos as immoral. And since IVF completely diminishes the marital act as the means of achieving pregnancy, it can never be moral.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church states in section 2377: “Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and fertilization) are perhaps less reprehensible (than surrogacy, for example) yet remain morally unacceptable. They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act … ‘Under the moral aspect procreation is deprived of its proper perfection when it is not willed as the fruit of the conjugal act, that is to say, of the specific act of the spouses’ union.’”
In addition to the moral barriers to IVF and freezing embryos, many material challenges are raised by the process.
Children born after being frozen as an embryo have a 30 percent higher risk of genetic abnormalities, according to the U.K. Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. They are also 10 times more likely to suffer rare genetic disorders like Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, a cause of cancer in children, according to Dr. Rosanna Weksberg of the University of Toronto.
In 2022, AOC sponsored a Democratic bill that would have codified abortion rights into federal law after the U.S. Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe v Wade.
While running for office in 2018, the congresswoman spoke at a “Pride” event celebrating homosexuality and sexual perversion.
“Pride is about honoring the community workers, the people who work in the clinics, the community organizers, the people who work with LGBT youth, the people who are fighting to make sure it’s not just about marriage equality but about quality of life for all people in the community, everybody,” she said.
