ROME, Nov 23 (LSN.ca) – Taking the initiative to solve the ethical quagmire over the use of stem cells from aborted babies and embryos, a Catholic medical school in Rome is setting up a stem-cell bank. Catholic News Service reported yesterday that Sacred Heart University’s School of Medicine will inaugurate Italy’s first personalized stem-cell bank this January, allowing parents to store their children’s stem-cells from their umbilical cords for future use against disease. Salvatore Mancuso, director of the Catholic university’s obstetrics and gynecological clinic, said “umbilical cord cells can have the same value and the same use as embryonic cells” and eliminate the search for compatibility.
