TORONTO, Oct 3 (LSN) – The Catholic Register, thought to be Canada’s premiere Catholic newspaper, has published an article praising the controversial show ‘Nothing Sacred’. In its Sept 29th edition, the Register, a publication of the Archdiocese of Toronto, lauded the show saying, “In a world of ‘dumb,’ tabloid put-down and exploitation, it glows with the glimmer of the momentary presence of the divine.’‘

A number of readers are expressing dismay that the Register would take a favourable stand on this program which delivers a serious attack on the Church. The Catholic Register’s position on the matter stands in stark contrast to the 29 Catholic, Protestant, Muslim, and Jewish groups that have joined in the boycott of the television show. As the number of advertisers quitting the show has increased to ten with the addition of Sears, AT&T, Red Lobster restaurants, Ocean Spray, and Glaxo Wellcome, the support for the show by a prominent Catholic newspaper is all the more confusing.

Dismissing any disagreement with their stand, the Register declared, “Purists will quibble with liturgical details, the offendable will be offended, but Nothing Sacred is a rare and important addition to prime time television.’‘
