ERIE, PA, July 4, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Pax Christi USA, which bills itself as the “National Catholic Peace Movement”, has cancelled its national assembly after the Catholic university where the event was scheduled refused to allow the pro-abortion keynote speaker on campus. Pax Christi national coordinator Nancy Small told Catholic News Service that Christian Brothers University in Memphis Tennessee refused to allow Rev. James Lawson to speak at the scheduled Aug 3-5 annual meeting.

According to a report in the United Methodist News Service (UNMS), Lawson, a civil rights leader in the 1950s and 60s and pastor of Holman United Methodist Church, Los Angeles, “waved the banner of reproductive choice in Washington Feb. 25,” 1997. The UNMS report notes that “As keynote speaker for a convocation of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, he said, so many of the people who would deny abortion are the same people who do not want the care of children who are living.”
