SEATTLE, May 19, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) – At a luncheon yesterday at the Seattle Sheraton hotel in honor of National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) Washington director Karen Cooper, state governor Christine Gregoire said to Cooper, “We are blessed to have had you as our great leader.” The governor went on to speak of “those, candidly, not yet born who will benefit from your leadership.”
“She is obviously an icon in this state” Gregoire later said of Cooper.
Outside, pro-life demonstrators led by Rev. Philip Bloom, pastor of Holy Family Parish in West Seattle, carried signs proclaiming “Adoption is a Living Option” and “Abortion is Homicide.”
“We want to be a witness for the dignity of human life,” Fr. Bloom told reporters.
Gov. Gregoire, a self-described Catholic, supports the advance of same-sex “marriage” in the state, has forced Washington pharmacists to dispense the “morning after” pill despite objections of conscience, approved the display of an atheist proclamation on a sign placed beside a traditional Nativity scene inside the Washington state capitol building, and supports “abortion rights.”
“We want to challenge her on that,” Father Bloom said. “I know the archbishop has had conversations with her. I would like to have a conversation with her. Why does she not connect this (life issue) with her faith?”
Commenting on what he hoped to accomplish by the protest, Fr Bloom said, “I’m here to protest the right to abortion; it hurts the woman as well as the child.”
Attempts by LifeSiteNews to reach Archbishop Alexander Brunett of Seattle for comment were unsuccessful.
