Argentine Judge Rules Abortifacient Birth Control Pill and IUD Illegal – Orders Them Destroyed

BUENOS AIRES, May 30, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Argentine Judge Cristina Garzon de Lascano of Cordoba province ruled last Thursday that oral birth control pills and the intrauterine device (IUD) are illegal in the pro-life country due to their abortifacient nature.  The judge banned the production and sale of the abortifacients and also ordered destruction of existing supplies.  The judges ruling was based on established medical fact noting that the drugs are abortifacient.  In Argentina abortion is illegal and punishable by prison.  Argentine Health Minister Gines Gonzalez Garcia gratuitously attacked the ruling calling the judgment “absurd and based on the plea […]

Holy See Dismayed That Draft Euro Constitution Ignores Christianity

Vatican, May. 30 (LifeSiteNews.com/CWNews.com) – The Vatican has expressed “surprise” and disappointment that the draft version of a new constitution for the European Union does not acknowledge the role of religion in forming the culture of the continent.  An official statement released by the Vatican press office on May 30 noted “with satisfaction” that the draft constitution “envisioned a constant dialogue which churches and with religious communities.” However, the statement pointed out that in the preamble, in which the draft mentions the elements of the common European heritage, “the absence of an explicit mention of Christianity was noted with surprise.”  […]

Australian State Supreme Court Rules Feeding Tube Can Be Removed

MELBOURNE, May 30, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Victorian Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the feeding tube of a mentally incompetent 68-year-old woman could be removed.  Australia’s The Age reports “Justice Stuart Morris ruled that the artificial feeding and hydration being provided to the woman, known only as “BWV” was a medical procedure rather than palliative care, and therefore could be refused.”  Although the woman’s family was supportive of the decision, both the Catholic Church and the pro-life movement both intervened against removal of the artificial feeding.  Alex Schadenberg, executive director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition told LifeSite, “The Euthanasia Prevention […]

Unborn Baby of Florida Handicapped Woman Aborted

MIAMI, May 30, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A baby of four months’ gestation, the preborn child of a mentally handicapped rape victim, was aborted on Thursday evening, after a judge ordered the baby’s death a week ago, allegedly “to protect its mother.”  Doctors at Jackson Memorial Hospital—who previously said an abortion was unnecessary—told Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Arthur Rothenberg late Wednesday that the baby, who had successfully reached 24 weeks, would likely not survive outside the womb. That was apparently just what the judge wanted to hear (although he had already ordered the abortion to proceed).  Curiously, media focused on the “medical […]

OTTAWA, May 29, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Over the last number of weeks LifeSite has been asked repeatedly for a list of Canadian charities which are supportive of embryonic stem cell research. Support for the controversial research by the charities has led donors with moral convictions to focus their donations elsewhere. LifeSite recently discovered that The Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC) supports embryonic stem cell research. The ASC “Statement on Stem Cell Research”, developed in June last year, notes “guidelines for stem cell research developed by CIHR and covered by federal legislation will be used by ASC to define the scope […]
