WASHINGTON (LSN) — The US Senate will vote this week on a proposal by North Carolina Republican Jesse Helms to cut off all funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, the agency which gives “taxpayers’ money to self-styled artists whose art comes straight from the gutter and the sewer.” Hard-core pornography has been produced and distributed with money from the NEA. STUDY FINDS NO TIME FOR FAMILY

OTTAWA (LSN) – According to a Statistics Canada study released Tuesday, women in the hectic 1990s who are less likely than ever before to take a break in their careers. And those who do take leave (usually to raise children) are likely to return to work faster than than they were even in the late 1980s. Sadly, the study noted that economic and career concerns have are outstripping family considerations. Mothers have noted they are now forced to work outside the home just to make ends meet. CARDINAL DEFENDS MOTHER THERESA’S ABORTION STANCE

CALCUTTA (LSN) – Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the Vatican’s secretary of state, spoke at Mother Teresa’s funeral on Saturday on behalf of pope John Paul II. There he defended the nun against critics of her anti-abortion stance, and urged her followers to take up where the missionary had left off. He praised her committment to “the defenceless unborn.”

VANCOUVER (LSN) – B.C. Supreme Court Justice W.H. Davies has ordered the BC College of Teachers to approve Trinity Western University’s application for accreditation of its teacher education program. DISSIDENT CATHOLIC GROUP COMES UP SHORT

CANADA (LSN) – “Catholics of Vision: Canada” is a nominally Roman Catholic group calling for liberal changes in Church doctrine, including changing attitudes towards contraception and abortion. The group has fallen far short of its goal to get 100,000 signatures on a petition calling for changes in the Church.
