PRO-LIFE CATHOLICS OBJECT TO PRO-ABORTION SPEAKERS AT CATHOLIC EVENTS

WASHINGTON,  April 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Three separate instances of pro-abortion speakers highlighting Catholic events are being vigorously challenged by different pro-life groups in the U.S.  American Life League (ALL) has written Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles about a college within his diocese which is having two pro-abortion politicians address their students at graduation ceremonies.  Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.), and her sibling, freshman Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), militant supporters of abortion on demand, are scheduled to speak at Mount St. Mary’s graduation in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 10. ALL is calling for an immediate cancellation of the pro-abortion […]

STEM CELLS USED TO CREATE BRAIN CELLS

MINNEAPOLIS, April 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Scientists at the University of Minnesota Medical School have used adult stem cells to create brain cells in mice. Further research could one day lead to treatments for Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s, Alzheimer’s and other brain diseases.  Dr. Walter Low led the U.S. team that injected stem cells from adult mice into a mouse blastocyst (an embryonic mouse) to create a chimera – an animal with both its own cells and transplanted stem cells. Tests revealed that the latter had successfully developed into functioning nerve cells. The next step will be to test the […]

LONDON, Ont., April 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – An Ontario Superior Court judge of the Family Court Branch has rejected the application of a lesbian mother who wants her same-sex partner to be declared a legal parent or second mother. The two had the support of the boy’s natural father, who was never married to either of them but is their “friend” as well as their sperm donor, and a virtual member of the household.  The trio sought legal recognition for what they call their “loving circle of family.” In an indication of what he would have preferred to do, Justice […]

HESTON WITHDRAWS STEP FURTHER FROM PUBLIC GAZE

WASHINGTON, April 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Actor Charlton Heston, 78,  renowned as one of the few great Hollywood stars with a solid Christian faith and as a supporter of pro-life, pro-family causes, has taken a major step out of the public limelight. This weekend he retired as president of the National Rifle Association, citing his recent diagnosis with Alzheimer’s.  Heston remained prominent long after the peak of his film career in the 1960s, partly because of “his outspokenness about conservative causes, including opposition to abortion,” media said.  He was an early advocate of civil rights for blacks in America and […]

VATICAN LEXICON OF U.N. TERMINOLOGY ON LIFE AND FAMILY STIRS CONTROVERSY

VATICAN, April 25, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) – As the Vatican's recently published lexicon nears translation into English and other languages, the Italian version released earlier this year has stirred considerable controversy. The 876 page document involves the interpretation of 78 “ambiguous terms” involved in “discussion of the family, life and ethical questions”. In a recent interview with the Italian news agency I-Media, Cardinal Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, the president of the Pontifical Council for the Family, reaffirms that the document is an official document of the Holy See and was directed to politicians as well as to the faithful.
