LONDON, August 2, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Anglican Bishop of Rochester, the Rt. Rev. Michael Nazir-Ali, who is ethics chairman of Britain’s Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, has criticized the about-face of an influential British thinker who once opposed human cloning. The bishop, said to have been second choice for next Archbishop of Canterbury, blasted Mary Warnock’s new human cloning proposals which he said would “let the genie out of the bottle.” In 1984, she achieved a ban on cloning after publishing the landmark Warnock Report on fertility, which formed the basis of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act six […]

TORONTO, August 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Toronto police have reported that the crime rate in Toronto actually dropped during World Youth Day’s week-long events.  Muggings and street crime were down from the usual numbers, Sergeant Robb Knapper told the Toronto Star.  “There were no crime-related incidents involving pilgrims,” he said. “We had tons of lost passports, knapsacks and other stuff, but no reports of anyone being involved in crime.”  World Youth Day 1993 attendees informed LifeSite that police in Denver Colorado – where the event was held that year – reported a similar crime drop.  See the Toronto Star coverage […]

JESSE VENTURA PROCLAIMS ‘CHRISTIAN HERITAGE WEEK’—BY MISTAKE

SAINT PAUL, Minn., August 1, 2002 (LSN.ca) – Jesse Ventura, Minnesota’s staunchly anti-religious governor, has inadvertently proclaimed Oct. 13-19 as Christian Heritage Week. The proclamation, submitted every year by Virginia-based Christian Heritage Ministries, quotes Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Patrick Henry and George Mason as statesmen “who did not hesitate to express their faith.”“Somehow it got in the wrong pile,” spokesman John Wodele said. “It would not [otherwise] have been approved.” Ventura has always refused to sign religion-related proclamations in the past, although he did sign one from an atheist association. His office tried in vain this […]
