TORONTO, Feb 25 (Lifesitenews.com)  According to Toronto police the problem of youth accessing pornography on the Internet in libraries has become rampant.  Many libraries across Canada have refused to restrict Internet access to ban the viewing of pornography. A recent incident at Downsview Public Library had police called in when a 19-year-old threateningly chased a Library staff member after she cut short his Internet voyeurism.  The Toronto Sun reported “Police were shocked by the large number of kids looking at sex on the Internet,” at lunch time and after school hours. BOYCOTTS AND POLITICAL PRESSURE PROVE EFFECTIVE

WASHINGTON, Feb 25 (Lifesitenews.com)  If pro-life and pro-family activists can learn how to use publicity more regularly as a tool to combat their opponents, they might reap valuable rewards. The response to CNN czar Ted Turner’s recent anti-Christian comments effectively illustrates this point. On February 16, at a meeting of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Association (NHPRHA), Turner called for an international “one-child policy” while making degrading jokes about the Ten Commandments, and a racist joke about Pope John Paul II.  Following the news reports of his comments, the Catholic League responded quickly demanding an apology, as did […]

NEJM: SPACE CHILDREN NO MORE THAN 21/2 YEARS APART

LANSING, MI, Feb 25 (Lifesitenews.com) – A new study in this month’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine claims that children should be spaced two to two-and-a-half years apart.  Interestingly, the study suggests that while perinatal risk is increased somewhat by spacing children closer together, there is a much greater risk when children are spaced further apart. An editorial comment on the study took an anti-natal stance, focusing only on encouraging doctors to ensure that patients space children further apart. It did not discuss the risks associated with spacing beyond 2-and-a-half-years.

WEST CRITICIZED FOR SILENCE ON CHINESE HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES

BONN, Germany, Feb 24 (Lifesitenews.com)  Yesterday exiled Chinese freedom fighter Wei Jingsheng criticized western nations for looking on “in silence as human rights are trampled daily in China.” Wei stressed that the only Western politicians that speak forcefully for human rights in China are those not in positions of power. He said that the UN is “an organization without authority, which sends representatives to Beijing simply to be able to say it has made efforts towards dialogue.” Agence France-Presse reported that Wei rejected the notion that economic dealings with China encourage change. This is the approach that has been adopted […]

TAXPAYERS FUND ABORTION, BUT NOT CANCER TREATMENT

TORONTO, Feb 24 (Lifesitenews.com) – Yvette Sherman, 56, who had emergency cancer treatment in France during a trip there last July has been told by the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) that her treatments were “elective” and therefore not covered. Sherman was diagnosed by a French doctor with cancer of the cervix and urged to undergo immediate treatment, reported the Toronto Star.  After calling OHIP and being told to proceed if it was an emergency, Sherman received radiation treatment and a hysterectomy. Despite this apparent claim that OHIP does not cover elective treatment, it does in fact maintain an aggressive […]

THE HAGUE, Feb 24 (Lifesitenews.com)  A UN “Youth Forum” held February 6-7 as a prepcom for the upcoming five-year review of the “Programme of Action” established by the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD + 5) did not accurately reflect the views of world youth.  Professor Richard Wilkins of the NGO Family Voice charges that many of the “Recommendations” in the youth forum’s Report directly conflict with widely held religious norms and attack basic moral values. Professor Wilkins reveals that the report calls for “Comprehensive sexual education in schools.”  And says further that such education “should be mandatory at […]

PARENTAL NOTIFICATION LAW STICKS IN VIRGINIA

WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Lifesitenews.com)  On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an appeal brought by abortionists to nix a Virginia law requiring parental notification prior to abortions for minors.  The law merely requires that unmarried girls under 18, and not living on their own, inform at least one of their parents no less than 24 hours before having an abortion. The law does not require them to get their parents’ consent for the abortion.  Exceptions to the reporting requirement include cases when the abortionist believes the young mother is a victim of abuse or neglect, and situations where the child […]
