RU-486 DEATH OCCURRED IN SECOND CANADIAN STUDY

VANCOUVER, September 19, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Notorious Vancouver abortionist, Ellen Wiebe, revealed to the Vancouver Province yesterday that the RU-486 abortion pill trial, which led to the death of an unnamed Canadian woman on September 1, is the second such study in Canada. The Province reports today “Wiebe has already completed one trial involving 1,042 Canadian women in Vancouver, Toronto, Quebec City and Sherbrooke, Que.” She informed the paper that the second trial began in March and will involve 1,500 women. U.N. PROMOTING POPULATION CONTROL IN PAKISTAN AND NICARAGUA

MANAGUA, September 19, 2001 (LSN.ca) – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), internationally known for its promotion of abortion, has signed deals with the governments of Pakistan and Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan human rights defense office has signed an agreement with UNFPA to promote the sexual and reproductive rights of women, children and adolescents through a series of programs over the next four months. AUSTRALIAN GOV’T COMMITTEE SUPPORTS EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH

CANBERRA, September 19, 2001 (LSN.ca) – An Australian parliamentary advisory committee on stem cell research has come out 6-4 in favour of using surplus embryos in stem cell research. The group, which was formed to years ago to develop national guidelines on the matter, also unanimously endorsed research on adult stem cells. The 300-page report by the committee issued Thursday, recommended a total ban on human cloning and a ban on the creation of embryos for research. JUDGE BLOCKS OHIO PARTIAL-BIRTH ABORTION BAN

DAYTON, September 19, 2001 (LSN.ca) – U.S. District Judge Walter Rice today blocked the state of Ohio from enforcing a ban on partial-birth abortion. Rice called the law unconstitutional citing the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning a similar ban in Nebraska. The judge said that the procedure was determined to be safer than other late term abortion procedures for some women. The New York Times reports that the bill had been signed by Gov. FRENCH RULINGS ENDANGER ALL POSSIBLY DISABLED PREBORNS

PARIS, September 19, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A French appellate court ruled this week that a 10-year-old girl with mental and physical disabilities should receive financial compensation because her mother was not told during pregnancy that the child might be disabled and was thus “den[ied] … the opportunity to have an abortion.” Reuters reports today that Alicia and her parents should receive $85,000 in compensation (Reuters/New York Times, 9/20). Judge Patricia Cleary of Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court was suspended from practicing law for six months yesterday by the Ohio Supreme Court. In 1998 Cleary denied the request of a young woman convicted of fraud to go on probation rather than serve a jail term.
