US SENATE COMMITTEE TO REJECT INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT?

NEW YORK, May 21 (LSN) – According to a report released today by the Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute (CAFHRI), the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee will halt US ratification of the International Criminal Court (ICC). CAFHRI reports that the lead lobbyists fighting the ICC in the US, the Catholic Alliance, announced today that “each Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee is now committed to killing this treaty.”  The proposed strategy for effecting the ICC is by international treaty which, in the US would require the signature of the President as well as Senate approval. REVERSE DISCRIMINATION IN GAY BENEFITS AT BELL ATLANTIC

MANHATTAN, May 20 (LSN) – Bell Atlantic employee Paul Foray launched a $500,000 lawsuit against his employer yesterday, saying the phone company refuses to give health benefits to his live-in girlfriend,  but does give them to the partners of gay employees. Foray’s lawyer Linda Cronin, said, “He is being discriminated against because he is a male with a female domestic partner If he were a female with a female domestic partner, he would get benefits.” Bell Atlantic responded in a statement yesterday,  saying, “We believe that our policy on domestic-partner benefits complies fully with all applicable laws and regulations.”

U.N. LAWYER DISCUSSES INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

UNITED NATIONS, May 20 (LSN) – United Nations Legal Counsel Hans Corell said Monday that final negotiations for the proposed International Criminal Court (ICC) should be complete before the end of the summer. Corell noted that the UN Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries (decision-making body), will meet from June 15 to July 17 to finalize and adopt a draft statute for the court, to be ratified by the parliaments of individual nations.  Corell pointed out that questions remain about the jurisdiction of the ICC. YOUNG MOTHER OVERCOMES TRAUMA, CHOOSES LIFE

SAO PAULO, Brazil, May 19 (LSN)  A heroic eleven-year-old rape victim gave birth to a healthy child last Friday in Brazil. The girl, who was encouraged by church leaders not to choose abortion, wrote to newspapers after the birth of her child, saying, “I am feeling very happy All mothers should fight to save the lives of their children.” The girl and her 6-pound baby were able to leave hospital Saturday.

SURVEY SHOWS DOCTORS REJECTING ASSISTED SUICIDE

LOS ANGELES, May 19 (LSN) – In a recent survey of cancer doctors conducted by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), support among MDs for doctor-assisted suicide and euthanasia has fallen dramatically over the last three years. PRO-LIFERS CLAIM POLICE BRUTALITY IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

PORTSMOUTH, N.H., May 19 (LSN) – According to New Hampshire Right to Life, pro-lifer Deborah Mears was assaulted by police “for no reason.” While protesting outside a National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League fundraiser last Thursday, Mears and other demonstrators were ordered by police to move to the other side of the street. CONSCIENCE LEGISLATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA

SIOUX FALLS, S.D., May 15 (LSN) – On July 1, a new law in South Dakota will protect pharmacists from losing their jobs, should they refuse to fill prescriptions for abortion or euthanasia drugs. The legislation passed in the House and Senate with overwhelming majorities of 57-10 and 30-3 respectively. Giving the lie to their “pro-choice” rhetoric, Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups complained bitterly about the measure.  The law comes on the heels of a decision in favour of South Dakota pharmacist Jeff Gallagher who was threatened with losing his job for refusing to fill prescriptions for “morning-after pills.” […]
