COURT PACKED FOR MORRISON HEARING

HALIFAX, Feb 10 (LSN)—Nearly 100 spectators packed a Halifax courtroom today to witness the preliminary hearing of Dr. Nancy Morrison, who has been charged with murder in the 1996 death of Paul Mills, a 65-year-old cancer patient. An external committee that reviewed the incident for the hospital reported that Morrison is alleged to have administered a medication “outside ethical and acceptable medical practice.”  Perhaps in response to a massive media campaign to make Morrison a hero for the cause of euthanasia, and a petition with over 4,500 signatures demanding that the charge be dropped,  Crown Attorney Craig Botterill has announced […]

MAINE PRO-FAMILY GROUPS OPPOSE GAY PRIVILEGES

AUGUSTA, Maine, Feb 8 (LSN)—Last spring homosexual activists managed to gain special privileges through adding “sexual orientation” to the list of prohibited grounds of “discrimination” in Maine's Human Rights Act. In other US states and across Canada, similar legislation has been used by the gay lobby to gain “marital” and “family” status—including the right to adopt children— and to silence moral opposition to their “lifestyle.”  Fortunately, a campaign to repeal the anti-family legislation has gained ground. Armed with 58,000 signatures on a petition, pro-family groups in Maine have succeeded in setting the stage for a “people’s veto” of the law, […]

CALIFORNIA MANDATES COVERAGE OF CONTRACEPTIVES

LOS ANGELES, Feb 6 (LSN) – Last week the California State Assembly approved legislation which forces all employee insurance plans to cover contraceptives and abortifacient pills and devices such as the I.U.D. The bill (AB 160), sponsored by Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), was put forward by Assemblyman Robert Hertzberg. Providentially, proceedings have been interrupted, as California Governor Pete Wilson has demanded an amendment to give employers the ability to opt out if they object to covering contraceptives and abortifacients on religious or moral grounds.  Hertzberg has refused consent to the amendment, arguing that “It would have cut the […]

COLUMBUS, Ohio, Feb 6 (LSN) – Governor George Voinovich has signed two bills restricting abortion in Ohio. One measure halts the use of state funds, directly or indirectly, to provide healthcare insurance benefits for “non-therapeutic” abortions for state employees. The other bill requires a physician to meet with a pregnant woman at least 24 hours before an abortion in order to answer questions and provide medical information, thus encouraging the mother at least to stop and think before choosing to end the life her preborn child. NASSAU, Bahamas, Feb 6 (LSN) A Norwegian cruise liner, the Leeward, chartered by some 900 homosexual passengers, was prevented from landing in the Bahamas by high winds and waves.  Christian leaders, who demonstrated Tuesday to protest the proposed landing of the ship,  rejoiced at the turn of events, and called it an answer to their prayers.  Baptist Bishop Harcourt Pinder, president of the Bahamas Christian Council, noted that the Bahamas government had invited the cruise ship to dock on its shores after the homosexual “love boat” was denied permission to dock in the Cayman Islands. “But I still feel that […]

PORTUGAL LEGALIZES ABORTION

LISBON, Portugal, Feb 5 (LSN)—On Wednesday the Portuguese Parliament voted 116-107 to allow abortions on demand up to the 10th week of pregnancy. Previously, the law in this predominantly Roman Catholic country permitted abortions only for strict medical reasons, including fetus malformation or perceived risk to the mother’s life.  Demonstrations by hundreds of pro-fers outside marked the tragic occasion. Under the bill, women wanting an abortion can have consultations at family planning centers and will be referred to public or private clinics if they want to go ahead with the procedure. The measure will take effect in 90 days unless […]
