CHAMPAIGN, IL, November 22, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Critics are saying, while the latest round of grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development seem to be an improvement, problems persist.

Most recently, the University of Illinois’ YMCA chapter has lost $60,000 in funding from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) over its partnership with a pro-gay “marriage” organization.

The YMCA chapter, which has received $41,000 from the local Catholic church and CCHD in two years, also formally aligned with and received money from the Illinois Coalition for Immigrants and Refugee Rights. The Coalition is a statewide organization that works with illegal immigrants. However, because the organization supports same-sex “marriage,” CCHD withdrew its funding.

YMCA is not the first organization to give up CCHD funding over the redefinition of marriage. LifeSiteNews.com reported in October on nine groups that gave up almost $300,000 in CCHD grant money to maintain their ties to pro-gay “marriage” groups. It was almost one-quarter of the total number of groups CCHD helps on an annual basis.

CCHD is the official domestic aid agency of the U.S. bishops. It went through an internal review, and was modified and restructured in 2010, due to prior willingness to fund organizations that opposed Church teachings on various issues.

American Life League senior research analyst Rob Gasper said that while “there are still a large number of morally problematic grantees receiving CCHD grants, our initial look at the 2013 grants list suggests an overall improvement” compared to recent years.

Last month, Chicago's Cardinal Francis George praised CCHD for standing with Church teachings. “Donors to the CCHD give to this anti-poverty organization with the understanding that their money will be passed on to organizations that respect the teachings of the Catholic faith,” he wrote. “Organizations that apply for funds do so agreeing to this condition.”

The American Life League gave examples of how CCHD failed to uphold Church teachings in past grants, giving money donated through official Church channels to organizations that “promote abortion, contraception, homosexuality, and Marxism.”

ALL credited CCHD for “distributing $500,000 to the Birth Choice Health Clinic Network in California.”

But Michael Hichborn, director of ALL's Defend the Faith project said, “with over 20 problematic grantees that continue to receive Catholic funds, we cannot recommend participation in the program. CCHD's vetting process has yet to fully adhere to its established guidelines.”

Hichborn pointed to two current CCHD grantees that he said did not deserve “a single cent” of Catholic funding: Community Action Board and Syracuse Cooperative Federal Credit Union.

CAB admits that it promoted the establishment of family planning services in public schools.

SCFCU, which was founded by the Socialist Party USA's 1988 vice presidential candidate, gave donations to Planned Parenthood and supports homosexual activism.
