CHICAGO, January 27, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) — Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago called it a “moral obligation” to get vaccinated, without taking into account the moral questions of using vaccines that have some connection to abortion at various stages of development, including testing.

In yesterday’s tweet, Cupich “encourage[d] everyone, when your time comes and you are invited to get vaccinated, to do so.”

“As [Pope Francis] has said, we need to do it for the common good; we have a moral obligation to our neighbors, co-workers, friends and family,” argued the archbishop of Chicago, who was made a cardinal by Pope Francis in 2016.

Cupich referenced Pope Francis’ comments on taking the vaccine, despite the fact that current COVID-19 vaccines to some extent rely on abortion to be produced, thanking the Holy Father for offering “clear moral guidance” on the issue.

The Pope had previously stated in an interview with Italy’s TG5 that he believes “morally everyone must take the vaccine,” and taking the vaccine “is the moral choice because it is about your life but also the lives of others.”

Dodging the moral issue of abortion in relation to the vaccine, the Pope asked, “If the doctors are presenting this to you as a thing that will go well and doesn’t have any special dangers, why not take it?”

On December 23, 2020, the day that Cupich received his shot, the Archdiocese of Chicago stated in a press release that it intends to promulgate material “on the importance of being vaccinated” as well as “the continued importance of adhering to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines: wearing a mask, maintaining six feet of social distance from others … until everyone is vaccinated.”

As things stand, the two available COVID-19 vaccines, produced by pharmaceutical companies Moderna and Pfizer, are closely connected to abortion, using the HEK-293 cell line in the development and testing of their vaccines.

A group of prominent bishops, including Bishop Joseph Strickland of Tyler, Texas, penned a joint letter in December last year, outlining that it’s morally illicit to take vaccines associated with abortion. The bishops emphasized that “[a]ny link to the abortion process, even the most remote and implicit, will cast a shadow over the Church’s duty to bear unwavering witness to the truth that abortion must be utterly rejected.”

Concerning grave circumstances, an oft-raised objection to people not willing to take the vaccine because of their connection to abortion, the bishops resolutely state that the “ends cannot justify the means.”

Bishop Athanasius Schneider also spoke with LifeSiteNews’ John-Henry Westen to discuss why, despite the instruction of the Pope and prelates like Cupich, Christians must never take an abortion-tainted COVID vaccine.

“[B]ecause of the gravity of the abortion, of the exceptional character of the abortion, of the incomparable evil, and the current situation of an ever daily growing industry of killing unborn children … even to use cells of aborted children for testing, it’s already immoral,” the bishop explained.

There are also other reasons why people oppose the coronavirus vaccine.

In early December, a former vice president and Chief Scientist at Pfizer, Dr. Michael Yeadon, petitioned for the halting of all testing of coronavirus vaccine candidates in Europe due to the significant safety concerns of a growing number of renowned scientists.

These concerns included, “allergic” and “potentially fatal reactions,” risks that these vaccines may cause infertility in women, result in an increased vulnerability to the virus, and present unacceptable dangers of long-term effects due to a lack of proper testing.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also drew up a document this fall listing the possible side-effects from a COVID-19 vaccine, including strokes, encephalitis, auto-immune disease, birth defects, Kawasaki disease and death.

A group of U.S. doctors warned the government against forcing millions of Americans to take an “experimental” COVID-19 vaccine that would amount to the “largest medical experimentation program in U.S. history.”

Dr. Simone Gold, MD, JD, founder of America’s Frontline Doctors, said that while the accelerated rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine according to President Trump’s “Warp Speed” program is an “impressive” logistical accomplishment, the vaccination program itself “should be approached with caution.”

“Vaccination mandates at the state, local, and private level are incompatible with civil liberties and subject millions of Americans to an experimental drug,” Gold said in a press release.

“For this reason and more, America’s Frontline Doctors is asking regulators to open up the process to additional public comment and transparency before millions more doses are manufactured and administered,” she added.

Gold told LifeSiteNews that “most Americans should not consider an experimental drug for an illness with a 99.7 percent survival rate as the risk of the experimental treatment would exceed any benefit.”

“Doctors take a Hippocratic Oath to do no harm. America’s Frontline Doctors is calling for greater transparency for concerned citizens and better data for policy makers before we embark on the largest experimental vaccination program in history. Experimental vaccinations must always be an informed decision between a doctor and his or her patient that takes into consideration a plurality of risk factors including patient age, comorbidities, and exposure risks,” she added.

In a speech recently banned from YouTube and Vimeo, Gold exposed the dangers of COVID-19 vaccines, slamming the vaccines as “experiment biological agents.”

“We strongly discourage the vaccine in age 20 to 50 because there’s an exceedingly low risk of death from COVID,” Gold said. “There’s unknown risk from the experimental vaccine of causing autoimmune disease. There’s unknown risk of this pathogenic priming antibody-dependent enhancement, and there is an unknown risk of lifelong infertility.”

“You’re going to have to keep going with the mask and the social distancing” after taking the vaccine, Gold continued. “It actually changes nothing. Once you hear that, you really have to question why you would put yourself in that situation.”

“It’s really irrational to take a brand new untested, untried technology from a company that’s completely shielded from immunity, when on the other hand I’ve got a drug that’s 65 years old, has been given billions of times, completely safe for all age groups,” she said, referring to hydroxychloroquine.

Gold also noted ivermectin, which physicians across the world have touted as a “miracle drug” and which the National of Institutes of Health approved for use last week.

“I learned pretty early that the big fight was the fear,” Dr. Gold related. “The big fight wasn’t the virus. It was the fear.” People “really just want to go back to normal lives, so they’re either kind of consumed with fear or consumed with just being weary of the whole situation. That is what I think is leading to people making what is really a fundamentally irrational decision to rush headlong towards an experimental medication,” Gold said.
