CHICAGO, October 20, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Cardinal Archbishop of Chicago was driving past an abortion facility one day, and saw a group of young people praying. He has sent a letter thanking the group of young adult pro-life activists from St. Mary of the Angels Young Adult Group who for years have done sidewalk counseling and prayer vigils outside Chicago’s Planned Parenthood abortion facilities.

Tessa, a member of the parish-based group describes their work. “There are usually about ten (pro-lifers) praying while one or two try to hand potential Planned Parenthood clients information about abortion. We also offer them information about the lawsuits that have been filed against that particular clinic as well as alternative places that they could go for help.”  In his letter, Cardinal George praised the young people for their pro-life witness. “I’m sure that many of you had errands to run, housework to be done or you could have just slept late on a cool fall morning,” the Cardinal wrote. “Instead you chose to give an hour of your time to standing up for the dignity of the unborn, opposing the culture of death and reminding women and men who come to Planned Parenthood that the Church offers life-saving alternatives to those who have been led to believe that abortion is their only option.”  Tessa remarked that she does not find the pro-life witness discouraging or depressing. “I would like to encourage people to come out to pray with us. Often times we think of the abortion clinic as Calvary. Praying in front of clinics has changed my life, and I think it is a great way for people to grow closer to Christ.”  Cardinal George concluded his letter, “Your trust in the power of prayer, as well as your generosity to Catholic crisis pregnancy centers, give evidence that Christ remains faithful to his Church by sending his Holy Spirit to guide us in living as his disciples. May your example invite other young women and men to return to the practice of our faith. I will remember you in my prayers, and I ask you to remember me in yours. May God bless you.”  Those in the Chicago area interested in joining these young adults can contact Tessa at:  [email protected]
