RUI’AN, China, June 4, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A couple in southern China has been fined 1.3 million yuan ($210,450 USD) for giving birth to their son’s baby sister, a record fine under the Communist country’s one-child policy.

Chinese officials reportedly calculated the fine by the wealth of the unnamed couple, who have stakes in several businesses. One report cited by Brimbank Weekly said that “the figure stunned the couple, but they paid the fine.”

Repercussions for unauthorized children in China routinely include crushing fines as well as forced abortions and sterilizations.

Wendy Wright of C-FAM said the fine was particularly abhorrent for punishing the birth of a baby girl – an increasing rarity in a society with birth rates skewed by son preference.

“In a country where aborting girls is so prevalent it is suffering from a lack of females, China ought to be paying couples to have girls. Instead, these parents somehow eluded the authorities long enough to give birth, and paid a premium when caught,” said Wright.
