WASHINGTON, Oct 10 (LSN) – The US House of Representatives approved a Republican plan to provide about 2,000 federally funded vouchers to help low income Washington, D.C., children attend private schools. Although Clinton and the Democrats opposed the measure, it was passed today by a 212-197 vote.

The bill would provide federally funded scholarships of up to $3,200 that low income students could use to pay for private schools or public schools in outlying suburbs. The Senate has opposed the voucher system thus far.
