TORONTO, May 17, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Ontario Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty has come under fire for attacking the Conservative government’s plan to allow partial tax-credits for private schooling. McGuinty characterized the credit as pandering to the wealthy to the outrage of religiously motivated private schoolers.

“The vast majority of those people who chose faith-based schooling are hard-working low- and middle-income people,” said John Vanasselt, of the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools. The Associated Press reports that Vanasselt, whose alliance represents more than 130 Christian schools with more than 25,000 students, said he was upset with Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty’s attacks against the tax credit.

The Canadian Jewish Congress also registered its “deep concern” with the way McGuinty and NDP Leader Howard Hampton have been describing the tax credit. “We struggle day in and day out to keep our schools in decent physical shape,” said Ed Morgan, chairman of the Canadian Jewish Congress. “Our schools are not like Upper Canada College and other high-end private schools.”
