(LifeSiteNews) — In a significant concession involving one of the Midwest’s largest healthcare providers, the Department of Justice secured restitution related to so-called “gender-affirming” medical treatments provided to minors.
Last week, Cleveland Clinic agreed to pay a $2 million penalty to cover the cost of medical care for minors who later wished to “detransition” after receiving sex-rejecting “treatments,” including puberty blockers and surgeries.
In a June 5 press release, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Division Brett Shumate touted the settlement as a major win and applauded Cleveland Clinic for being “part of the solution.”
“I am grateful that institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Texas Children’s have decided to be part of the solution, not part of the problem,” Shumate stated.
“Cleveland Clinic’s commitment to providing millions of dollars towards care for detransitioners is emblematic of just that.”
The resolution not only secured restitution funds, but Cleveland Clinic also agreed that it would not provide “sex-rejecting procedures” on minors for a period of 20 years.

Pro-transgender groups in Ohio labeled this concession an “abandonment” of the state’s gender-confused youth. TransOhio issued a statement on Facebook emphasizing how “furious” the decision had made the organization.
“TransOhio is furious and deeply concerned that Ohio’s Cleveland Clinic has entered into a settlement agreement that will further restrict access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth and adolescents in Ohio,” the statement read.
“No amount of leading with cruelty will stop trans youth from growing into amazing trans adults; Ohio is incredibly trans and queer, and no one person, hospital, or government agency will change that.”
While pro-transgender groups attempt to tighten their grasp on vulnerable and confused children, other hospitals are following the lead of Cleveland Clinic and ending such practices.
Last month, Texas Children’s Hospital agreed to pay a $10 million penalty for transgender “treatments” performed on minors while also committing to creating the first “detransition clinic.” Additionally, the hospital agreed to permanently end sex-rejecting procedures on minors.
Shumate made it clear that while these concessions from larger healthcare providers were big wins, there is still more work to be done.
“I am grateful for this resolution with Cleveland Clinic, but our work is far from over, and our division will continue to work tirelessly to protect America’s children and hold accountable those that have preyed on vulnerable children, whether they be pharmaceutical companies or medical providers,” he stated.
