CLEVELAND, May 7, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Police in Cleveland are searching a property for “possible aborted babies” after finding three women who had been kidnapped and held as sex slaves for a decade or more.

Investigators say the dirt in the back yard appeared to have been “disturbed.”

Police say they believe the women had been pregnant as many as five times but found only one child on the premises, a six-year-old girl whom victim Amanda Berry told police she conceived with one of her captors.

According to local reporter Scott Taylor of 19 Action News, “investigators are looking for possible aborted babies in the backyard” of the residence where three brothers allegedly held three young women.

On Monday night, an intensive 10-year search came to an end when neighbors heard Amanda Berry screaming through the locked door of a residence where authorities say three brothers kept Berry and two other women chained, repeatedly raping and impregnating them.

A local man and woman gave Berry a cell phone while Charles Ramsey kicked in the door.

“Help me. I'm Amanda Berry,” she said. “I've been kidnapped, and I've been missing for 10 years. And I'm here. I'm free now.”

When officers arrived, they found three victims and Berry's child.

Police and family thought they would never see any of the women again. Berry was kidnapped April 21, 2003 – one day before her 17th birthday – after getting a ride home from her job at Burger King.

Michele Knight was kidnapped in 2002 at the age of 20. The brothers snatched Gina DeJesus, then 14, in 2004 as she walked home from middle school.

Police have arrested 52-year-old Ariel Castro and his brothers Onil, 50, and Pedro, 54.

The three kept two of the women chained in the basement and another in a room upstairs at the property, which neighbors thought was deserted.

Ramsey told the media when he saw Berry, she appeared malnourished. However, all three women are otherwise reported to be in good health.

Ariel Castro worked as a bus driver for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and played bass at local clubs. People in the neighborhood described him as a model neighbor.

However, his troubled history extends throughout his family.

Cleveland.com reports that Castro's 25-year-old daughter, Emily Castro, was convicted in 2008 of slashing the throat of her 11-month-old daughter. She received 25 years in prison.
