EDMONTON, May 10, 2001 (LSN.ca) – Lorne Gunter, a columnist with the Edmonton Journal and an Editorial Board Member at The National Post responded to a piece in yesterday’s Post calling on the Canadian Alliance to “lose the pro-life fight.”
In his rebuttal, Gunter points out that “While pro-lifers admit their ultimate goal is a ban on most or all abortions, they would be happy with any victory, even a tiny one, such as outlawing the grotesque practice of partial-birth abortion. By contrast, the suggestion of even the slightest restriction sends pro-choicers into histrionics. To call even just for a national debate provokes charges of religious extremism. Just who, then, is obsessed?”
Moreover Gunter notes that “if the CA has a political problem with abortion, it comes from the party’s lack of a stance, not its preoccupation with it.” He says, the CA has “hidden behind a promise of a national referendum on the issue. That does nothing to satisfy the supposedly all-powerful pro-lifers, while at the same time it permits the Liberals, Tories and media to claim the CA has a hidden agenda.”
