The Catholic clergy sexual abuse saga has produced a raging tsunami of media reports the likes of which we have never seen. This is a massive story with many complex aspects.
It seems to be the final, howling blowout of the diabolical 1960s sexual revolution which itself was likely in large part generated by intense Post World War II Communist efforts to destroy the social foundations of the West. Especially targeted were the religious beliefs and related moral principles that undergirded Western freedoms and the dignity and natural rights of the individual human person and the family. They had to be corrupted for atheistic socialism to succeed.
Blatant bigotry and hatred has been permitted to be published in newspapers and magazines and presented on the airwaves these past few weeks with no one being charged so far with hate crimes or sued for clear malevolence and presentation of false and slanderous information. Many, many good people seem to have succumbed to the tactics of painting the entire Church leadership as evil. Yes, there has been evil, but also vastly more good that is being ignored in those reports.
On the other hand, there have also been many excellent reports and statements both defending Church leaders, where they should be defended, or responsibly exposing serious Church leadership failings and even corruption that has still not been faced and firmly condemned and rooted out. Both of these types of reports are good – and necessary. As we have repeated many times – the Catholic Church's serious problems are still far, far from being fully resolved, despite many positive developments in recent years.
There is no simple black and white in all of this and any who believe that are dangerously misled. There is both a malevolent campaign to use this situation to destroy all of authentic Christianity and also one to finally root out the lingering diseases in the Church. And then there is also just downright chaos and confusion.
On a much lighter note, I will be speaking at the annual People Concerned for the Unborn Child conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania this Saturday. If you are near there you may wish to attend the conference. It promises to be an enjoyable day. I will be the last speaker at 2 p.m. For more information and to register see the PCUC website. .
Editor-in-Chief John Henry Westen will be travelling to the annual REAL Women of Canada conference on Saturday in North Bay, Ontario. More information on that event can be seen on the REAL Women website.
