TOKYO, JAPAN, October 29, 2001 ( – A Tokyo doctor who sells condoms is offering to pay for abortions if the condom breaks. The bizarre scheme called “Girl’s Guard” is the brainchild of Dr. Tsuneo Akaeda who says he will pay for an abortion during the first 11 weeks of pregnancy or on a first-time pregnancy test.

The Mainichi Daily News reports that those applying for the free abortion must send in the busted condom to the Girl’s Guard company with a photo of the woman by registered post. If the woman then finds she is pregnant, she must obtain a pregnancy-test certificate from a doctor and send it in with an ultrasound scan and personal identification. The company uses this information to determine whether the time of conception matches the time the condom was broken.
