WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (LSN) – On Tuesday the US Congress, as part of its budget, denied all funding to federal needle exchange programs. Rep. Todd Tiahrt, (R-KS), put forward the clause after receiving reports that police officers felt they were forced to “turn away” from drug pushers as they showed up to receive needles from the government distribution vans.  The Conservative News Service reported that Tiahrt presented two exhaustive longitudinal Canadian studies conducted in Vancouver and Montreal which demonstrated that needle exchange programs have severe negative consequences: “deaths increased, the program users were twice as likely to contract HIV, drug trafficking increased and crime increased.” Interestingly despite the evidence the powerful AIDS lobby in Canada has stifled initiatives to halt the destructive program.
