WASHINGTON, March 28, 2003 (LifeSiteNews.com) In the wake of the 64 to 33 U.S. Senate vote two weeks ago to ban partial-birth abortion, the House Judiciary Committee has voted 19 to 11 to bring a similar measure to the floor of the House of Representatives.
“A moral, medical and ethical consensus exists that partial-birth abortion is an inhumane procedure that is never medically necessary and should be prohibited,” said Rep. Steve Chabot, an Ohio Republican. “Opponents of this bill want to hide from the facts.”
Democrats are vowing to fight the bill. “Congress should not be involved in banning specific medical procedures,” said Rep. Tammy Baldwin, a Wisconsin Democrat. “We, in essence, have Congress practicing medicine and doctors practicing law.” Added Rep. Jerrold Nadler, New York Democrat: “There will be dire consequences to American women if this legislation passes.”
