How much porn should federal employees be watching during work hours, at public expense? According to Rep. Mark Meadows, R-NC, the answer is none.

“Allowing federal employees to access pornographic materials in the workplace creates an unprofessional and potentially hostile work environment for fellow workers,” said Meadows in a press release announcing his new bill, the “Eliminating Pornography from Agencies Act.” According to Meadows, “This bill is a common-sense measure that ensures federal workers aren’t viewing pornographic materials on the taxpayers’ dime.”

Meadows' bill is a response to public outrage over reports showing that numerous employees at multiple agencies have viewed pornography at work – sometimes for several hours a day. One EPA employee who was caught watching as much as six hours of porn per day has been put on leave, but not fired, as an investigation continues into his behavior. The Washington Free Beacon reports that the EPA employee is still receiving a paycheck, despite being banned from his office building months ago.

House Oversight Committee member John Mica, a Florida Republican, expressed outrage in a hearing at the time after learning that the employee was receiving bonuses.

“So this guy is making $120,000, spending two to six hours a day looking at porno. Then this information I have is he received performance awards during the time period?” Rep. John Mica, R-FL, asked Allan Williams, deputy assistant inspector general for investigation for the EPA, in a hearing.

Williams answered in the affirmative.
