OTTAWA, January 20, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Conservative Party of Canada is rejecting the assertion by a Liberal candidate that his campaign office was surreptitiously used by someone not connected to his campaign to falsely accuse the Conservative candidate of sexual abuse on a call-in television program. After the call accusing Conservative incumbent MP Maurice Vellacott was confirmed to have been made from the campaign office of Liberal candidate Chris Axworthy, the Liberal apologized but added with it what many are calling a self-serving conspiracy theory.

A press release on the matter from the Conservative Party states, “In perhaps the most incredible claim of the campaign, Chris Axworthy admitted the call was placed from his office, but said someone not connected to his campaign sneaked in and made the call.” Axworthy had said, “It is quite possible that a mischief-maker entered the headquarters and misused one of our phones.”

Today, the Conservative Party released an affidavit (see it here: https://www.lifesitenews.com/ldn/2006_docs/relibworker.pdf ) from Tom Hengen, past leadership candidate for the Saskatchewan Liberal Party, swearing the “mystery caller” is one George Laliberte – a well-known associate of Mr. Axworthy. Dr. Henegen, a registered doctoral psychologist, says he has listened to the tape several times and that the voice is that of Laliberte, “who is well known to me.”Â

The attempted cover-up has caused the Conservatives to call the Liberals to disassociate themselves from Axworthy’s campaign.“The Liberal campaign was caught making false accusations, and now appears to be caught in a cover-up,” stated Conservative Party Campaign Chair John Reynolds.“Mr. Axworthy had a chance to come clean and instead chose to deny any involvement. Paul Martin should take immediate action to remove his party’s support from Mr. Axworthy.”

Bloggers are having a field day with the cover-up conspiracy theory. One comment emailed to CFRA’s Lowell Green show stated: “The official line is that Axworthy’s office is located in a strip mall and is accessible to the public. Someone marched in (possibly a homeless person) and used the party phone to call in to the debate. The fact that he was on hold for 12 minutes didn’t raise any suspicions but in fact he could have been served a donut and coffee.”
