OTTAWA, July 30 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Health Minister Allan Rock has denied claims that the Liberal government is planning to pour $15 billion into a massive child-care system, countering reports in yesterday’s National Post that stem from a leaked document produced by bureaucrats in Health Canada’s Childhood and Youth Division. A Health Canada press release claims: “The draft paper has not been subject to review, discussion or endorsement by senior Health Canada officials or the Minister, nor has it yet reached the stage of development for serious interdepartmental or intergovernmental discussions.”

No matter where they come from, however, suggestions that the Liberals want to become more involved in the raising of children make pro-family forces nervous, especially when they include references to the universal daycare program promised by the Liberals over half a decade ago before they formed the government. Ron Gray, head of the Christian Heritage Party,  condemns the very idea of daycare: “We now have longitudinal studies of more than 15 years’  duration which show that institutional daycare – even the best of it – actually harms children,” he told LifeSite News. He recalled that during the 1997 election the CHP “proposed a 'family-friendly tax credit’” which would have abolished the “spurious 'need’ for a national daycare system.”
