MONTREAL, Jan 3, 2001 (LSN.ca) – A bizarre Canadian cult, believing in aliens, is claiming to have received over $700,000 to clone an American couples daughter who died last year at 10-months old. The Raelian Movement, centered in Quebec, claims that it will produce a clone of the couple’s daughter from her skin cells by the end of the year. Vrigitte Boisselier, the scientific director of the cult’s biotech company Clonaid has convinced her daughter Marina Cocolios, 22, to carry the couples’ cloned baby.

The cult’s company website Clonaid.com says it will charge as low as $200,000 US for its cloning services using the cloning techniques which were successful with the cloning of the sheep “Dolly.” They also advertise a service called Insuraclone which, for $50,000 US, will provide the sampling and safe storage of cells from a living child or from a beloved person in order to create a clone if the child dies of an incurable disease or through an accident.

Law in Canada or the United States does not yet ban cloning of humans.
