MEXICO CITY, Dec 4, 00 (LSN.ca) – Mexican President-elect Vincente Fox’s adopted daughter Ana Cristina, 21, is a pro-life activist and offers hope for Mexico’s unborn children. She works with mother’s experiencing crisis pregnancies and has made public statements in favour of repealing some state laws allowing abortion in cases of rape. Quoted in a media interview, she noted that if her mother chose to abort “I wouldn’t be here”. On the rape exception she said, “I understand that to be raped must be really hard, especially if the result is pregnancy, but you can’t forget you are carrying a life inside you . . . and at the hour you decide to abort, you are killing it.”
The Toronto Star article notes that the driving force behind the powerful movement for life in the country is the strong leadership of Catholic bishops, who constantly herald the right-to-life. The Star reports that although President Fox says he is personally pro-life, he “would not impose his views on the nation, nor put pressure on state legislatures.”
