TORONTO, September 16, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A campaign to defund abortion from provincial healthcare coverage is being ramped up with Defund Abortion rallies being planned all across Canada, Campaign Life Coalition (CLC) announced today.

On October 3, 2013, Defund Abortion rallies will be held simultaneously at the provincial legislatures of Alberta, Manitoba, and Nova Scotia. CLC is also working to organize mini rallies outside each one of the 107 Ontario MPP constituency offices on that date.

Newfoundland Labrador will hold their rally on September 28, while rallies in Saskatchewan and Quebec are planned for the spring of 2014.

Campaign Life Coalition’s Youth Division started the Defund Abortion taxpayer defense initiative two years ago, with a rally attended by over 2300 protesters at Queen’s Park in Toronto.

In addition to subsequent rallies at the Ontario legislature, in 2012 CLC Youth organized its first province-wide Defund Abortion Mini-Rally campaign, where 47 of 107 MPP offices were targeted with simultaneous rallies.

“It got the attention of MPPs and generated a lot of media discussion about taxpayer funding of abortion,” said Campaign Life Coalition Youth Coordinator Alissa Golob.

“Campaign Life Coalition Youth holds the position that government-funded abortions are a blatant abuse of tax dollars, are severely unjust, and that these funds can and must be directed away from the killing of our preborn children,” Golob told LifeSiteNews.

Golob said that Ontario taxpayers currently pay $50 million/year for abortion. “That price tag excludes the cost of abortion complications such as perforations, uterine hemorrhage, post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide, infertility and breast cancer,” she explained.

“It’s ludicrous to ask us to open up our wallets for these killings when the province is drowning in debt, and genuine areas of health care are neglected, such as treating autistic kids, fixing doctor and nurse shortages, improving elder care and buying MRI machines,” she said.

“It's one thing for an individual to make a personal choice to kill a baby in the womb, but it's quite another to expect the rest of us to pay for it.”

Golob said the Defund Abortion movement will now expand nationally, in order to send a powerful message to provincial governments that taxpayers should not be forced to fund abortion, an elective procedure that is not medically necessary.

“In almost all abortion cases, the life of the mother is not in danger. The simple truth is that more than 96% of the time, abortions today are performed for convenience, as a back-up birth control method. That’s clearly not a medical necessity and should not be funded as such,” Golob said.

The Ontario Defund Abortion mini-rallies will take place on October 3 from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon and are planned for all constituency offices across the province.

CLC is asking for a pro-life person in each of the 107 provincial ridings to step up to help organize a mini-rally outside their MPP’s offices. So far, rallies are planned at 39 of the offices.

“Please download this instruction manual to read the simple steps involved in organizing a mini-rally. Then, please consider volunteering,” Golob urged.
