U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 24, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – In the latest instance of elected Democrats championing policies they would have disavowed just a decade ago, Democrat Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota indicated this week she believes that illegal immigrants should be free to obtain abortions at taxpayer expense.

Reacting to reports that the Trump administration’s increased immigration enforcement is allegedly leading illegal immigrants to forego visits to abortion centers due to fear of being identified and deported, Omar declared, “No one should fear receiving medical care because they are undocumented. We must ensure that all people in our country have access to reproductive health care.”

On her website, Omar clarifies that she favors abortion “coverage and care regardless of income or insurance,” and repealing the Hyde Amendment, which bans most federal tax dollars from directly financing most abortions.

The position that American taxpayers should pay for not only abortions, but abortions for people with no legal right to be in the country in the first place, represents a stark left turn for the Democrat Party’s official position. In 2009, Democrats and their allies bitterly condemned claims that the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) would cover illegal immigrants. Former President Barack Obama affirmed support for the Hyde Amendment a year later; the Democrat Party platform didn’t call for repealing it until 2016

In May, Omar took to the House floor to assail pro-life Americans as “religious fundamentalists” who aren’t sincerely “concerned about children,” but instead seek to “criminalize women for existing.”

A Muslim congresswoman, Omar is controversial beyond her home state primarily for her history of anti-Semitic and anti-American statements, which have made her a focal point in the controversy over President Donald Trump and his supporters suggesting she and a handful of other Democrat lawmakers leave the country if they hate it so much. In addition, questions continue to swirl around allegations that Omar once married her brother to commit immigration fraud, and that as a child her family used a false name to get asylum in the United States.
