PHOENIX, Arizona (LifeSiteNews) – A candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial primary in Arizona dodged questions about whether or not she supports abortion up to birth.

Katie Hobbs, the current Secretary of State of Arizona and a candidate in the Democratic primary, spoke to a local CBS affiliate last week about a bill signed last month by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey that limits abortions at or after 15 weeks, and was asked if she supported time limits on abortions.

“Well, women deserve access to abortion care [sic],” said Hobbs. “Abortion is healthcare. I’ve been very clear on my position on that throughout my career in the legislature.” When pressed on the matter, Hobbs stated that “Abortion is a personal decision between a woman and her family and her doctor, and that’s something that needs to be discussed in the medical exam room, not by politicians.”

Hobbs, when still serving in the Arizona state legislature, voted against several pro-life bills. In 2012, Hobbs voted against The Mother’s Health and Safety Act, which prohibited abortions after 20 weeks. The previous year, she voted against a bill that barred abortions that discriminate against race and sex.

Hobbs also voted against a bill that required doctors to resuscitate babies who survive botched abortions, saying that “it is cruel and against medical ethics to administer that kind of resuscitative care that can actually harm the infant.”

Hobbs’ comments come in the wake of a campaign organized by CatholicVote that seeks to urge Hispanic Catholics in Arizona and Nevada to challenge pro-abortion Catholic politicians who recently voted for the radical Women’s Health Protection Act.
