February 26, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — All six Democratic U.S. senators running for president in 2020 voted Monday against requiring medical professionals to save a child born alive after a failed abortion.

Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Kamala Harris of California, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts each voted against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

The Act would have required health care practitioners to “ensure that the child born alive is immediately transported and admitted to a hospital” and it also exempted the mother who gave birth to the child from prosecution.

The Senate voted 53-44 in favor of the bill Monday evening, but it fell seven votes short of the 60 needed.

Democrats Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Doug Jones of Alabama broke ranks with the party’s vote and supported the bill. Susan Collins, one of the Senate’s two pro-abortion Republicans, voted for it as well.

Republicans Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Tim Scott of South Carolina did not vote, Fox News reported, due to apparent scheduling issues.

The legislation first introduced in 2015 was put forth in the current session as an answer to Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam’s shocking comments last month casually defending leaving newborns without medical care in certain circumstances after a failed abortion.

Northam’s remarks, which drew considerable controversy, came amid a wave of radical abortion expansion legislation proposed and passed in various states this year designed to enshrine abortion as a right at the state level in the event Roe v. Wade were to be overturned by the Supreme Court.

Conservatives and pro-life supporters decried the Democrats’ blocking of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.

“Senate Democrats just voted against legislation to prevent the killing of newborn infant children,” President Donald Trump tweeted after the vote. “The Democrat position on abortion is now so extreme that they don’t mind executing babies AFTER birth. … ”

Trump said in a follow-up, “This will be remembered as one of the most shocking votes in the history of Congress. If there is one thing we should all agree on, it’s protecting the lives of innocent babies.”

Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee wrote in an opinion piece for Fox News, “There should be nothing controversial about voting to give babies born as a result of a failed abortion the same degree of medical care given to those born at the same stage of a pregnancy.”

“It should have been an easy vote for every member of the Senate, but on Monday night, many Democrats demonstrated that their pro-choice stance also requires them to support infanticide,” Blackburn said. “Sadly, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam’s recent comments advocating infanticide clearly framed the Democrats’ radical agenda. Their push to abort children reveals a hardened inner core that shocks the conscience.”

African pro-life activist Obianuju Ekeocha expressed disgust at the result, and charged the senators behind the vote with embracing evil.

“This is unbelievable,” she tweeted. “So if a baby survives abortion, there would not be any obligation to give necessary medical care to the baby. This is disgusting and every one of the 44 Senators who voted against this bill have embraced evil.”

Ekeocha also noted the nine Catholics among those who voted against providing medical care to newborn children after a botched abortion.

“These 9 Catholics voted against giving medical treatment to babies that survive abortion,” she said. “I don’t even know what to say about catholics who not only support abortion but infanticide of abortion survivors. The heart of the church is bleeding at this moment.”

Those Catholic senators opposing the Act were Gillibrand, Maria Cantwell of Washington, Dick Durbin of Illinois, Tim Kaine of Virginia, Patrick Leahy of Vermont, Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Bob Menendez of New Jersey, Patty Murray of Washington, and Jack Reed of Rhode Island.

In addition to voting against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, each of the Democrats in the Senate with their sites on the White House in 2020 — Sanders, Harris, Booker, Gillibrand, Klobuchar and Warren — has shown marked support for abortion, in some cases exhibiting blatant hostility to the pro-life cause.

It should be noted that while the Democrats are apparently running on a platform including radical abortion, a new Marist survey found that 80 percent of Americans now say they support limiting abortion to the first three months of pregnancy. That number jumped up five percent from just last month.

The poll also noted that since mid-January, around the time when Democrats began their rush to expand abortion up to and including birth, there was a marked increase in the number of Americans who identify as pro-life. Statistically, there are now as many people saying they're pro-life as those who are “pro-choice” (47 percent each).

That number in a mid-January Marist poll had been 55 percent calling themselves “pro-choice to 38 percent of Americans identifying as pro-life.”

Additionally, National Review reported that a recent survey by YouGov/AUL said nearly 80 percent of Americans oppose abortion in the last three months of a woman’s pregnancy.
