WASHINGTON, September 6, 2002 (LSN.ca) – The Senate Judiciary Committee voted along party lines to defeat Bush nominee Priscilla Owen’s nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals. Liberal interest groups made it their goal to kill her nomination in committee, and Senate Democrats made it so. “The leftists’ attack against Justice Owen was based on lies, and Owen clearly refuted the bogus charges brought against her in her hearing,” said Sandy Rios, president of Concerned Women for America. The Judiciary Committee should have rejected the false and misleading accusations leveled against this decent, highly qualified woman of integrity.” Family Research Council President Ken Connor said Owen’s defeat “exposes” the Democratic Party’s “absolute commitment to radical feminist organizations, which smeared [Owen’s] reputation for supporting a Texas law that requires young girls to notify their parents before having an abortion. … At the end of the day, Senators Leahy, Schumer, Feinstein, and Biden and others who opposed her nomination are to blame and have no excuse for dragging this good lady’s name and career in the political mud.” It is hoped that President Bush and U.S. conservatives use this extreme partisan bias on the part of the radically pro-abortion Democrats to their advantage in the upcoming elections.
