OTTAWA, September 30, 2002 ( – Marie Deschamps has been sworn in as the newest justice on the Supreme Court. She replaces Mme. Justice Claire l’Heureux-Dubé, who retired this year. Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin claimed that Supreme Court watchers have “not been able to pigeon-hole” Deschamps as a judicial liberal or conservative—although in fact her Liberal Party ties are known.  There are few indications of her position on life issues, but she did once allow a class action suit to proceed when only the applicant’s initials were provided.
