TORONTO, July 9 (LSN) – The Globe and Mail reported today that in vitro fertilization businesses are searching out intelligent white women for breeding purposes in order to satisfy customers looking for designer babies. The article reveals the search for donors has become big business with U.S. companies advertising over 300 donors on the Internet complete with photos and write-ups. University campuses the world over have been targeted for donors. Ads appearing in university papers play on the financial troubles of students, offering payments of up to $35,000 (US) for eggs.  Excalibur, York University’s student paper, recently contained the following ad:  “Married couple seeking young Caucasian female for egg donation ”  While collection of and payment for sperm and eggs is morally problematic and psychologically damaging,  collection of eggs from women also presents physical risks. The women must take fertility drugs with unknown after-effects, and they must undergo extraction procedures which involve a vacuum device inserted into the vagina.  Patricia Baird, a professor at the University of British Columbia who lead the 1993 Royal Commission on reproductive technology, called the new developments “disgusting” and said, “They have turned it into a meat market.”
