(LifeSiteNews) — Young people who said they’d been misled and severely damaged by participating in the transgender movement took to social media on March 12 as part of a “Detrans Awareness Day” event hosted by nonpartisan organization Genspect.

In posts and videos that went viral over the weekend, social media users who identified themselves as “detransitioners” shared personal photos and stories highlighting the trauma they underwent as participants in the transgender movement. Each post shared on March 12 bore the hashtag #DetransAwarenessDay.

“Detransitioners have been badly treated by society, and we owe it to them to show up, lend them our ears, and make sure that others also hear about these issues,” wrote Irish psychologist Stella O’Malley, who founded Genspect to help parents and children work through issues related to gender identity.

“Too few people seem even to be aware that medical transition carries a very heavy medical burden on the body, and seldom lives up to the image of the promised sunlit uplands where you can apparently become a member of the opposite sex,” O’Malley said. “The bitter reality is that we can’t ever become another person.”

A blog post published on the Detrans Awareness Day website advertising the event noted that while many people who seek to “transition” to the opposite gender experience “a dramatic journey of self-acceptance” and “an overwhelming degree of affirmation from doctors, mental health practitioners, and friends,” those seeking to reverse damaging hormonal treatments and surgeries often face “an unpopular trip to transition and back.”

“[O]n the other side, those cheering voices are silent and our existence is ignored,” the post noted, adding, “We’re here to cheer for each other.”

Photos and stories shared on social media for “Detrans Awareness Day” represented a broad ideological diversity, a feature pointed out in a March 13 Twitter post by Tarrant County Young Republicans President Emeritus Derrick Wilson.

“This isn’t a right v. left thing, it’s [about] being seen & protecting the innocent from harm,” Wilson wrote.

Some Twitter users who posted using the Detrans Awareness Day hashtag said they now identify as lesbian or gay after “detransitioning,” some suggested that people should be supported both for “transitioning” and for “detransitioning,” and others explicitly slammed “transgender ideology” for causing them them irreparable harm.

Many formerly transgender people who shared their stories said they became motivated to begin taking hormone treatments and obtain “gender reassignment” surgery after becoming part of communities, whether online or in person, that advocated for transgenderism.

At least one Twitter user said her school encouraged her to take male hormones after she “got sucked into gender ideology online.”

Transgender ideology in schools has become a major political flashpoint in recent months as disturbing evidence has emerged suggesting that school districts throughout the country are introducing very young children into radical sexual ideology that can have permanently damaging effects.

Nationwide controversy regarding transgenderism in schools has led parents to show up en masse to school board meetings to protest inappropriate and harmful materials in school curricula and libraries. Republican leaders like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis have also begun promoting legislation to prohibit or at least limit the discussion of sexuality and transgenderism in schools.

Meanwhile, some school districts have drawn massive backlash for actively seeking to exclude parents from even being aware of their children’s involvement in sexual ideology, including “identifying” as another gender.

In Wisconsin, a school district held a mandatory staff development day during which teachers were told, “Parents are not entitled to know their kids’ [gender] identities. That knowledge must be earned.”

Movements to encourage young people to explore transgenderism come in spite of the fact that transgender hormone drugs are linked to serious and potentially fatal side effects, including heart attacks, increased risk of stroke and cancer, sterilization, and psychological issues.

“Sex change” surgeries, which have been performed on children in the U.S. as young as 13, cause lifelong mutilation. Studies show that as few as two percent of boys and 10 percent of girls with gender dysphoria experience the condition after puberty, according to the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Transgender advocacy groups have often argued that the vast majority of people who “transition” are “happy” with their decision.

Sky-high suicide rates among individuals who have obtained transgender treatments seems to suggest otherwise, however.

Tragically, a 2018 survey released by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that over half of “transgender” male teens who participated in the survey reported they had attempted suicide at least once, and nearly 30% of transgender female teens also said they had attempted to commit suicide.

Moreover, in 2015, the National Center for Transgender Equality reported that 40% of transgender adults said they attempted suicide at least once in their lives, a rate that NBC News pointed out is “almost nine times the attempted suicide rate in the general U.S. population.”

In its blog post advertising the March 12 event, the backers of Detrans Awareness Day noted that while “[s]ome say that detransition is very rare” and “[o]thers refuse to acknowledge that we exist,” the organization wants “all to see that we are a group that is rapidly growing.”

“Our unique health care needs are ignored by the same professionals that were eager to medicalize us,” the post argued. “We are not going to hide in the shadows. We deserve ethical medical treatment.”
