ORLANDO, Florida (LifeSiteNews) — Disney criticized Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis after he signed the Parental Rights in Education bill on Monday, calling for the court or the legislature to strike it down.

The legislation protects parents and students from teachers and counselors who groom kids to identify as homosexual or transgender, meaning gender dysphoric. It applies to children in grades PreK through 3rd.

Disney opposes the legislation.

“Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts,” a statement posted on the company’s Twitter said. The company never refers to the bill by its real name, the Parental Rights in Education bill, but instead uses the term favored by the media and homosexual activists.

“[The] ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law,” Disney said. The word “gay” does not appear anywhere in the legislation.

“We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country,” the statement concluded.

Gov. DeSantis said this new law is a victory for the rights of parents.

“Parents’ rights have been increasingly under assault around the nation, but in Florida we stand up for the rights of parents and the fundamental role they play in the education of their children,” he said in a statement. “Parents have every right to be informed about services offered to their child at school, and should be protected from schools using classroom instruction to sexualize their kids as young as 5 years old.”

His lieutenant governor criticized liberal companies, without mentioning Disney by name, for opposing the legislation.

“This bill refuses to allow school boards and teachers unions the ability to hide information about students from their parents,” Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez said. “In addition, it prohibits classroom discussion in grades K-3 on gender orientation and sexual identity. Throughout this legislative session, this bill has been maliciously maligned by those who prefer slogans and sound bites over substance and common sense.”

“Fortunately, Governor DeSantis and I believe that parents should have a say.  We will not back down to woke corporations and their same tired tactics that are steeped in hypocrisy,” Nuñez stated. “As a mother of three, I am committed to protecting the rights of parents.”

Florida is not the only state to draw political attention from Disney.

Chief Human Resources Officer Paul Richardson said on March 21 his company plans to fight Texas’ order against child sex change surgeries.

“Because of our presence in Texas,” Richardson reportedly said, according to The Daily Wire, “we want you to know that we’ve signed on to the Human Rights Campaign’s letter opposing the Texas bill that criminalizes parents who provide for their transgender children gender affirming care.”
