MEDFORD, Oregon – Famed neurosurgeon and Johns Hopkins professor emeritus Dr. Ben Carson says that legal abortion is “human sacrifice” on par with what ancient “heathen” civilizations practiced.

On his June 27 show interviewer Perry Atkinson, president of Oregon's theDove TV, suggested to Carson that although “the abortion issue is very sensitive and very controversial,” it is also a spiritual battle. “If we can correct this one, it seems that all of the other things that God would be interested in helping us with would fall into alignment,” Atkinson said.

“If we're ever going to win this war with abortion, we have to be able to talk about it.”

“Well it's interesting that we sit around and call other ancient civilizations 'heathen' because of human sacrifice,” Dr. Carson replied, “but aren't we actually guilty of the same thing?”

Carson made the comment within the context of discussing his book, One Nation: What We Can All Do to Save America's Future, which, while noting the expanding list of America’s ills, also offers solutions he believes will get the country back on the right track.

“The one thing that I think is so important for Christians and for conservatives, if we're ever going to win this war with abortion, we have to be able to talk about it,” Carson said.

“The good thing is that the American populace is moving closer and closer to understanding that abortion is murder,” he said. “Every year we're getting better on that regard.”

Carson, who rose from poverty to become one of the leading neurosurgeons in the world, entered the political limelight last year after criticizing Obamacare and government intrusion into healthcare while President Obama sat beside the podium during the National Prayer Breakfast.

In addition to his strong stance on abortion and health care, Carson has been an outspoken proponent for the natural family. He told the Conservative Political Action Conference this spring, “Of course gay people should have the same rights as everyone else. But they don't get extra rights. They don't get to redefine marriage.”

He also pointed to the importance of “putting what God says in front of what any man says.”

At the end of the national anthem, he added that Americans “must remember that we cannot be free if we are not brave.”
