AMSTERDAM, July 7, 2004 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Leeuwarden City Council is demanding that a marriage registrar who refused to officiate at gay and lesbian weddings resign her position. The city council previously tried in 2001 to force the resignation of the public servant – who is in principle opposed to gay ‘marriages’ – but a judge thwarted the move due to a procedural error on the part of the municipal authority.  The public servant has not yet said whether she will take legal action against the council’s decision, which was passed by a small majority. If the issue does go to court, the judge will have to make a precedent setting ruling as to whether a public servant with conscientious objections may refuse to ‘marry’ homosexual couples.  Gay marriages have been legal in the Netherlands since April 2002.  See Expatica Coverage:  https://www.expatica.com/source/site_article.asp?subchannel_id=1&story_id=9204
