AMSTERDAM, Dec 20, 2000 (LSN.ca) – Yesterday the Dutch Senate approved homosexual marriage to take effect in March or April of next year. The legislation is thought to be the furthest-reaching so far in making homosexual marriage on par with heterosexual marriage in all respects including the adoption of children. The laws will apply only to Dutch nationals and residents.

The Age reports that homosexual partnerships are only legally recognized in a small number of countries including Sweden, Denmark, Norway and France.

Catholic World News reports that the Vatican’s L’Osservatore Romano denounced the “revolutionary innovations” in Holland, saying that same-sex unions are “contrary to nature.” Father Gino Concetti, the moral theologian who is a columnist for the Vatican newspaper, said the law is “a grave affront” to justice and a blow against the institution of marriage.
